Government urges parents to check prom limos in the North West

Posted on 24th May, 2012 by Jackie Jolliffe

The Government is advising parents in the North West to ensure their children’s prom limo hire is safe and legal before booking.

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) has issued advice to schools and parents on how to check if a limo hire company is licensed.

The organisation will be carrying out spot checks on limos at prom nights during May and June throughout the country.

Limousines in areas such as Manchester, Bolton, Liverpool and Preston must hold a passenger service vehicle licence or be licensed by the council. Without a licence, hiring out limousines is illegal.

Road Safety Minister, Mike Penning, said “VOSA will make full use of its powers to stop the small minority of cowboy operators who threaten to bring the industry into disrepute.”

“The limousines and novelty vehicle industry has seen rapid growth in recent years and I want to see these legitimate businesses continue to thrive.

“However, those operating vehicles outside of the law put the safety of their passengers and other road users at risk, and create unfair competition for legitimately-run businesses.

“This is something that will not be tolerated and VOSA.”

Possible hazards of using an unlicensed company in areas such as Manchester, Bolton, Liverpool and Preston include:

– Driver may not be properly licensed to drive the vehicle

– Vehicle and driver may not be insured

– Vehicle may not be built to the necessary safety standards

– Vehicle may not be maintained properly and could be dangerous

Use the ‘Operator Search’ service on the VOSA website to check if a company holds a passenger service vehicle licence.

Limo-Scene is a fully licensed company with some of the best limousines in the country available – and operates throughout the North West, including Manchester, Bolton, Liverpool and Preston.
