Originally, Chauffeurs were personal servants of limo or vehicle owners. The term comes from the French work for stoker – because in early automobiles a driver was required to stoke the engine because they were steam powered.
Before the advent of electric ignition, early petrol powered limos and motor cars were ignited by hot tubes which had to be pre-heated before the engine could start. They would prime the vehicle at the start.
Only the very rich could afford the first automobiles so they generally employed a chauffeur rather than having to drive it themselves.
These days, however, limo hire is much easier and chauffeurs come free with that deal.
