The Festival of Lights, Diwali, is just around the corner, and what better way to spend it than in style – with friends and family at one of the city’s hottest events.
Diwali is one of the biggest and major Indian festivals, which falls on November 11th this year. Celebrated by Jains, Sikhs and Hindus, the popular festival is all about enthusiasm and happiness and a beautiful story that signifies the end of darkness and the beginning of knowledge and light.
One of the common features of Diwali is people lighting oil lamps, called diyas, and candles all around their house, and in shops and public places. Fireworks are also associated with this festival and play a huge part in the celebration.
During October and November, Diwali is celebrated across the world at parties, ceremonies and with firework displays. Lots of families decide to organise their own celebrations, while many towns and cities also put on special events to celebrate the occasion.
While many Diwali events have already taken place, including the fantastic mix of live music, fireworks, dance and lanterns at Manchester’s Albert Square, there’s still lots to see and do in November.
One of the hottest events is the Indian Society of Manchester’s Diwali Mela 2015, at 6pm on Sunday 15th November. The event is free and being held at Academy 1, University of Manchester’s Student Union. There will be numerous stalls, Diwali pooja, performances, and a huge after party to celebrate the occasion.
In Liverpool, there’s plenty going on at the museums. There are activities for all ages at The Museum of Liverpool, on November 15th, and a Diwali family fun day at Liverpool’s International Slavery Museum on November 14th.
Of course, you might also like to put on your own event for the celebration or hire a venue for the night.
